Fountain of Youth (Musa & al-Khidr)

The living fish at the junction of the two seas.

In Surah al-Kahf, Allah tells how Musa (AS) traveled seeking knowledge until he met al-Khidr (الخضر) — a righteous servant taught knowledge from Allah. At the junction of the two seas, a fish they carried came to life and slipped into the water. That miraculous sign marked the place of their meeting. Later legends called such springs a “fountain of youth”; the Qur’an and Sunnah give the true account below.

Musa (AS) sets out to seek knowledge

When Musa (AS) was asked who was most knowledgeable, he answered that he was — and Allah corrected him that there was a servant at the junction of the two seas who possessed knowledge Musa had not been taught. Musa vowed not to stop until he reached that place.

Qur'an
And when Musa said to his boy-servant: “I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two seas, or I continue for a long period.” Qur’an 18:60
Hadith
Musa (AS) stood among the Children of Israel delivering a sermon. He was asked: “Who is the most knowledgeable of people?” He said: “I am.” So Allah reproved him for not attributing knowledge to Him, and revealed to him: “At the junction of the two seas there is a servant of Ours upon whom We have bestowed mercy from Us and whom We have taught knowledge from Us.” Musa asked how to meet him; he was told to take a fish in a basket… Sahih al-Bukhari 3401; Sahih Muslim 2380

The dead fish comes to life

Musa (AS) set out with his young companion (identified in tafsir as Yusha‘ ibn Nun). They carried a dead fish as provision. When they rested at the rock by the junction of the two seas, the fish became alive, leaped into the sea, and swam away — the sign that they had reached the appointed place. They had passed on without noticing until Musa asked for their meal.

Qur'an
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its path into the sea, slipping away. And when they had gone beyond it, Musa said to his boy: “Bring us our morning meal — we have certainly suffered in this journey much fatigue.” He said: “Do you remember when we rested at the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish — and none but Satan made me forget to mention it — and it took its way into the sea amazingly!” He said: “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned, retracing their footsteps. Qur’an 18:61–64
Hadith
Allah said to Musa: “Take a fish and put it in a basket, and wherever you lose the fish, that is the place — so go there.” He set out with his boy-servant Yusha‘ ibn Nun until they reached the rock and placed their heads down to sleep. The fish moved in the basket, fell into the sea, and went its way. Allah held back the flow of the sea on the fish like an arch… When they awoke, they continued until they became tired. Musa said to his boy-servant: “Bring us our meal…” Sahih al-Bukhari 3401

Meeting al-Khidr (الخضر)

At that place Musa (AS) found a servant of Allah granted mercy and knowledge from Him — al-Khidr. Musa asked to follow him to learn. Al-Khidr warned that Musa could not be patient with matters beyond his knowledge. Three events followed: the scuttled ship, the slain boy, and the restored wall — each revealing divine wisdom Musa (AS) could not initially grasp.

Qur'an
Then they found one of Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Our knowledge. Musa said to him: “May I follow you on condition that you teach me from what you have been taught right guidance?” He said: “Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience. And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?” Qur’an 18:65–68
Qur'an
So they set out until when they had embarked on the ship, he made a hole in it… until the story of the boy and the wall in the town whose people refused hospitality. Musa said each time: “Have you done this to destroy? You have certainly done a grave thing.” Al-Khidr explained the wisdom, then said: “This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.” Qur’an 18:71–82 (summarized)
Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about al-Khidr: “Is he a prophet?” He said: “How else could he teach Musa what he taught him except as a prophet?” — or in another narration, the wisdom is that he was taught knowledge directly by Allah as a righteous servant. See Sahih al-Bukhari 3401; tafsir of al-Kahf

Lessons — not a magic spring for all

The “fountain of youth” in popular tales is a distortion of this sacred journey. The Qur’an does not teach that anyone who drinks from a worldly spring will live forever. The miracle of the fish shows Allah’s power at the meeting-place of the two seas and introduces lessons in hidden divine wisdom. True eternal life is through iman and righteous deeds in the Hereafter.

  • Humility before knowledge — even Musa (AS) had a teacher.
  • Patience with Allah’s decree when wisdom is hidden.
  • Read Surah al-Kahf every Friday — Sunnah protection from the Dajjal.
Hadith
Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal. Sahih Muslim 809
