Zakka, Hadhya, Sadaka & Fitrah
Four distinct forms of giving in Islam — not interchangeable. Each has its own ruling, timing, and purpose.
Zakka (Zakat)
Obligatory worship (fard). A fixed portion of qualifying wealth (typically 2.5%) paid once per lunar year after nisab is reached. It purifies wealth and belongs to specific categories of recipients.
Islam is built upon five: to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to perform Hajj, and to fast Ramadan.
Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

Hadhya (Hadiyah)
A gift between people. Not zakat and not general sadaqah — hadiyah is something you give to honour ties, show love, or thank someone. It strengthens relationships; it is not counted as the annual zakat due on wealth.
Give gifts to one another, for gifts remove rancour from the hearts.
Al-Adab al-Mufrad (graded sahih by al-Albani)
Sadaka (Sadaqah)
Voluntary charity. Any amount, any time, from any lawful earnings — not limited to 2.5% or to zakat-eligible assets. It includes everyday acts of kindness and ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah).
Protect yourselves from the Fire even if with half a date in charity; and whoever cannot find that, then with a good word.
Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah)
A separate obligation at the end of Ramadan. Paid before Eid prayer by every Muslim — a set amount of staple food (or its value) for the poor. It is not part of annual zakat on savings and is not voluntary sadaqah.
The Messenger of Allah made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory — a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and food for the needy. Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is accepted zakat; whoever gives it after the prayer, it is sadaqah.
