Foundations of Faith
What imān is, why creed matters, and how to keep belief sound.
ʿAqīdah (creed) is the foundation of every act of worship. Before habits and rulings, a Muslim needs clarity on who Allah is, what He revealed, and what we must believe about the unseen. This guide summarizes mainstream Sunni teaching for study — confirm details with qualified teachers in your community.
Islam, imān, and iḥsān
The famous Hadith of Jibrīl defines three levels: outward submission (islām), inward faith (imān), and spiritual excellence (iḥsān). All three belong together; weak creed weakens everything built on it.
- Islām: the five pillars — shahādah, ṣalāh, zakāh, ṣawm, ḥajj
- Imān: the six pillars of faith (see the Pillars of Imān guide)
- Iḥsān: worshipping Allah as though you see Him, knowing He sees you
Sources of sound creed
Authentic creed is taken from the Qur’an and the Sunnah as understood by the early Muslim community (salaf). Personal opinion, culture, or trends cannot replace revelation.
- Qur’an — explicit and clear verses on Allah, the Last Day, and prophets
- Mutawātir Sunnah — especially hadith on belief and the unseen
- Consensus of the companions and scholarly tradition on core points
Balance in belief
Sound creed avoids two extremes: denying what Allah affirmed about Himself, or distorting His attributes to resemble creation. We affirm what He revealed without asking “how,” without likening Him to created things, and without stripping meaning from His names.
Signs of a healthy creed
Creed is not only theory — it shows in trust, worship, and character.
- Love and hope in Allah paired with fear of His displeasure
- Reliance (tawakkul) in hardship and gratitude in ease
- Rejecting shirk in all forms — hidden and open
- Asking scholars when confused instead of guessing from social media
Practical tips
- Memorize the shahādah and its meaning in your own language.
- Study one short surah on tawḥīd weekly (e.g. Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, An-Nās).
- Pair reading with a teacher — creed questions deserve live clarification.
