Single takbir (in prayer)
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Allahu Akbar.
Allah is the Greatest.
Raised with each extra takbir in Eid salah and for the opening takbir.
Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in Salat al-EidFasting, Fitrah & Eid
Ramadan ends with Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah) — a separate obligation from annual zakat on wealth, voluntary sadaqah, and everyday gifts (hadiyah).
Zakat al‑Fitr (Fitrah)
Not the same as zakat on wealth or general sadaqah. Every Muslim — man, woman, and child — must give a measure of staple food (or its cash equivalent) before Eid al-Fitr prayer. It purifies the fast and feeds the poor on Eid.
The Messenger of Allah made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory — a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and food for the needy. Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is accepted zakat; whoever gives it after the prayer, it is sadaqah.
Sunan Abi Dawud & Sunan Ibn Majah (narrated by Ibn Abbas)
Eid al-Fitr
Eid al‑Fitr marks the completion of Ramadan — a day of celebration, two-rak‘ah congregational prayer, and visiting family and friends.

Takbir al-Eid (complete formula)
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.
Commonly recited on the way to Eid prayer and after the congregational prayer until the khutbah.
Reported from Ibn Mas‘ud, Ibn ‘Abbas, and others — see Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Bayhaqi Eid takbir with transliteration
Takbir of the days of Tashriq (Eid al-Adha)
Same as the Eid formula — recited after each obligatory prayer from Fajr on the Day of ‘Arafah through the days of Tashriq (commonly through ‘Asr on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah).
The same takbir formula is emphasized after the five daily prayers during the days of Tashriq following Eid al-Adha.
Men often say it aloud after congregational prayers; women softly. Follow your local scholars on exact days and wording.
Sahih al-Bukhari 970; Sahih Muslim 1145 Full takbir — Eid & Tashriq
Extra takbirs — first rak‘ah (common practice)
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (×7 after opening takbir, before Al-Fatihah)
Say “Allahu Akbar” seven times with hands raised (in addition to the opening takbir), then recite Al-Fatihah and a surah.
In the first rak‘ah: opening takbir, then six or seven additional takbirs (scholars differ: 3, 5, 7, or 9), then recitation, ruku‘, and sujud as usual.
Hanafi: 3 extra in first rak‘ah, 3 in second. Shafi‘i/Maliki/Hanbali often teach 7 in the first and 5 in the second. Follow your imam.
See al-Bukhari & Muslim on the Prophet’s ﷺ Eid prayer Eid salah step-by-step
Extra takbirs — second rak‘ah (common practice)
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (×5 after standing for second rak‘ah, before Al-Fatihah)
Say “Allahu Akbar” five times with hands raised, then recite Al-Fatihah and a surah.
In the second rak‘ah: stand, say opening takbir for the rak‘ah, then additional takbirs before recitation (number varies by madhhab).
Do not rush — pause briefly between takbirs. If you join late, follow the imam’s count.
