Safety. Dust from cutting, chemicals for testing, and high-speed laps can injure eyes and lungs. Use ANSI-rated eyewear, dust control, and read SDS for any fluid. When in doubt, use a professional gem lab.
Typical study / bench tools
- 10× loupe (triplet) for clarity and surface reaching features.
- Polariscope, refractometer, dichroscope — as you advance (not all home setups need every instrument).
- Reliable scale for specific gravity (hydrostatic or heavy liquid methods with training).
