How to identify gemstones — observation & testing workflow
Gemology workbook — ID, cutting, evaluation, setting, and birthstones next to the video.
Systematic observation
- External: luster, transparency, surface features (abrasions, chips, polish lines).
- Internal: inclusions — crystal, fingerprint, needle — often diagnostic.
- Color distribution: zoning vs pleochroism; check with dichroscope when doubly refractive.
Key tests (trained use)
- RI / birefringence via refractometer narrows species lists.
- Hardness scratch tests can damage goods — prefer indirect reasoning.
- SG helps separate look-alikes (e.g. quartz vs glass).
