Flying with a smartphone β apps, FPV, OTG, WiβFi links
Drone workbook β build, tune, regulations, and smartphone apps next to the video.
What phones can do
- Configurator / ground station: Some stacks support USB OTG (Android) or companion apps for tuning / mission planning (platform-dependent).
- WiβFi video: Some digital systems push a phone-viewable stream β latency & range differ from analog goggles.
- iPhone vs Android: OTG behavior and drivers vary β check FC / manufacturer docs.
Limits
- Phone screens sun glare and touch can be poor for fast FPV vs goggles + radio.
- Keep firmware / apps official; avoid sketchy βrange hackβ apps.
βDrone from smartphoneβ builds
Educational kits sometimes pair a micro quad with phone WiβFi control β treat as short-range and follow the same battery and prop safety rules. For custom builds, prefer a dedicated radio for primary control and use the phone as secondary display or config tool unless your stack is explicitly designed for phone-only.
